What You Should Know About SaaS

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

The following is an article “What You Should Know About SaaS” by Marc Primo.

Not everyone is aware of today’s digital technology. For some, thoughts may wander off to fluffy white cotton-like shapes in the sky when the topic steers to the subject of cloud computing instead of zeroing-in on its advantages. But they are not entirely wrong. Since the birth of Software as a Service or SaaS, cloud computing has become a tool borne out of heaven and remains to be one of the most preferred alternatives when it comes to efficient data management today.

All You Should Know About SaaS

SaaS probably comprises the business technologies most companies use today and here are the fundamentals that you need to learn about it.

The birth of SaaS

To understand what SaaS is all about, we should probably go back to how it all began. In the late 1990s, desktop users were getting frustrated on how the software they purchased in CDs and installers weren’t living up to expectations. While SaaS has been around for about 40 years, this was the time when a number of users reported encountering difficulties in installing some segments of the software they had purchased, had issues with hardware-software compatibilities, and even not being able to install anything from the software at all. What was worse back then is that only a few companies were really able to provide real time troubleshooting assistance for customers.

Enter Salesforce or the first provider that built SaaS by experimenting on multiple aspects of cloud computing and is now the biggest industry provider today. Salesforce took advantage of the dot com boom and widespread internet usage during the late ‘90s to drive SaaS growth. By the 2000s, technologies such as broadband, data protection, application programming interface, and mobile internet were being provided by the company to millions.

SaaS defined

SaaS is a type of business technology provided by an external vendor that usually builds customized host applications for your company’s needs and makes your information readily available to users online. The term is interchangeable with cloud computing in how your data is stored remotely in a virtual cloud (it can even be in a garage somewhere depending on your vendor’s office space), making it a more cost-effective alternative than when you go to traditional providers. SaaS is intelligent technology that can provide customization, data management, and a range of functions that can identify users and feed them specific features that are useful and which they can appreciate.

How secure is SaaS?

Considering that a company’s data can be shared with the provider’s other clients through cloud storage, security becomes one of the most concerning aspects of the technology. However, SaaS is where you can actually get the best security management for your data through the installation of dedicated firewalls in your system. Prior to providing services, vendors usually perform a pipeline-to-pipeline study to determine your company’s needs and create a platform that has built-in cloud security that can detect potential threats or security breaches. If you think that storing your data internally is safer, consider that many businesses have fallen prey to internal security breaches in the past and that inferior email functionality and unsecured networks are two of the main tools in transmitting malware. In terms of security, SaaS is somewhat similar to hiring a professional security service that is equipped with the right tools to keep your home safe as opposed to merely opting for a huge padlock and bolt for your main door. SaaS is definitely more heavy duty than internal storages and you can rely on instant assistance the moment you need it.
